I had a ton of fun running in last year’s Shape Diva Dash, so I get to be an ambassador again!
The Shape Diva Dash comes back to the Boston area on September 6, 2014. Obstacle course races are blowing up right now but this one is different because it’s only for women and you can make it as hard or as easy as you want. There is no dirt, no getting soaked, no electrocution. There were some fun obstacles like the tire mountain, a hay bale mountain, jumping over water, a fun thing where you walk on a rope, and some other surprises.
The race is on a wave system, with the final wave going at 2:45 pm. You don’t even have to wake up early. This race had the most fun party vibe I’ve ever seen. The pre- and post- party was huge, with beer, wine, snacks and dancing. There were so many people who put teams together and dressed up according to their theme. I didn’t have a team last year and I regretted it, so you should definitely get your girls together for this. I think there is even a prize for best team costume.
The registration fee is currently $55 but you can knock $10 off using coupon code AXDIVAVILAY. The swag bag is great too. One of the starting waves is already sold out and we are six months out, so get your team in now to get a good starting wave. – Shape Diva Dash
Here is a funny picture of me from the Diva Dash. This one makes me laugh because it looks like I’m playing in a junkyard.
Anne says I should frame this for my husband and make him put it in his office because it’s so random.
Anyway, I joined a beginner running group and yesterday was our first practice! It’s supposed to be for first timers working towards a 5k. I felt guilty, like a fraud, but I reasoned that I cannot run longer than 15 mins continuously and my jogging speed is akin so some people’s walking (as proven by my husband). So I think I have a reason to be there. I want to do a 5k without walking!
I think I don’t have to feel too guilty though because there were others there who have done 5k’s. I seriously hope no one gets mad at me when they find out I’ve completed (ahem, not “run”) a half marathon.
I’m nervous that in one part of the plan, we go from 4 x 5 min running segments to suddenly “jog 20 mins.” I don’t know if I can do that! But I should be focusing on one day at a time, I know. hope training with this group will give me the challenge I need and havig coaches will finally get me some improvements.
I survived the Diva Dash! It turns out my anxiety was all for nothing. I got in a decent workout and had tons of fun doing it. This event was extremely well produced! One of the best events I’ve done, and I’m not just saying that because I was an ambassador.
October marks the 1 year anniversary of my first half marathon! I finally bit the bullet and registered for a fall race, my third half marathon. I’ll be running the UnitedHealthcare Newport Half Marathon right here at home. This is actually the same race series as the spring half I did. It bugs me that I’m doing 2 out of the 3 races and therefore won’t achieve the “Triple Crown” medal you get for doing all three.
My first race choice was Smuttynose but I waited too long and the day I decided to register was the same day it sold out. Lesson learned.
Ooh PS. I’m getting nervous because tomorrow is the Diva Dash race. The race I’ve been pimping for months is finally here. I’ve never done an obstacle race so I’m scared about how I’ll make it through. It’s a ladyfied course so the pressure is low and I can skip whatever I want to, but that might make it even more embarrassing if it takes me all day. I meant to try some monkey bars to see if I could even hang (pun intended) but I forgot. I’m pretty sure I shouldn’t even attempt them. I have no upper body strength! Alright enough with the negative talk, I need to focus on finishing.
I actually want to do another half marathon in November. My idea is if i run 13.1 on Oct 13 in Newport, I can keep training up to 15 or more miles then possibly PR in a November race. Let me know if you have any ideas for a good November race, even a destination one.
Remember how I hooked you up with a coupon for the Boston Diva Dash? That race is already close to selling out! If you want to register for New York Diva Dash, you better get on that right quick.
This race series looks like a blast. It’s a low pressure 5k distance with obstacle courses thrown in to make things interesting: could be a balance beam, a mud puddle, monkey bars, or getting balls thrown at you. I think there are a few surprises in store too. I love the laid back nature of this race: you don’t have to do anything you’re not comfortable with and you can wear whatever you want because costumes are encouraged. The reg fee ($45 if you use my coupon code: NYVILAY) gets you a women-specific wicking shirt, a goodie bag, and entrance to the after-party. Plus, they choose a charity in each location to receive a donation.
