I’m officially 30 years old. Whomp whomp.
On the day of my birthday, my coworkers surprised me with the world’s largest cupcake. I was really blown away by it because I’m not exactly a social butterfly.
I don’t know if these pictures convey how big this cake was. It was the size of one of those bakery muffins, with a mountain of frosting. It was so good! The frosting was more like chocolate mousse, and there was melty chocolate on the inside too. It took 3 people to eat.
After I got out of work, I headed out to Mohegan Sun Casino for the night. We got a suite, which amused me because of how “excessive” it was for one night. There were three closets, 1.5 baths, and mirrors everywhere. It was larger than my apartment! I was tempted to just order my favorite pizza (which has a location inside the casino) and eat it in bed but I controlled myself. This is the living room that I never got to sit in.

After checking in, I dropped into the Bare Escentuals store to pick up my free eyeshadow. I was also given a complimentary “make under” as they call it, even though they used way more products than I normally use on my face. Moisturizer, serum, primer, eye concealer, foundation, contour, blush, and setting powder.
In addition to the free eye shadow, I bought the Well Rested Face and Eye Brightener that she used on me. I told myself I would only be replacing my makeup with more natural stuff from now on, and I think I just broke my vow. Their foundation falls into the non-toxic category but I don’t think the other stuff quite fits the bill. I made it a pretty long time without buying conventional makeup though – 9 whole months.
We had a dinner at Todd English Tuscany because I had a gift card. It was a’ight but I don’t think I’d go out of my way to eat there again. We shared a bibb salad with blue cheese and walnuts, which was really good. We often split salads as an appetizer and I don’t mind sharing a plate at all, but it’s always nice when they even put it on two plates for us. For dinner I had pappardelle pasta with a short rib ragu. I appreciated that the sauce was lighter and fresher than you’d expect from a ragu, but it was wayyyy too much sauce for my preference.
I was really excited that birthday weekend coincides with my 17 mile long run which gave me free reign to eat bread and pasta. I wanted to devour the entire bread basket of warm focaccia bread. For dessert, they offered a complimentary chocolate cake for birthday peeps so I took them up on that. I was surprised and a little bit embarrassed that it came out with a candle in it. I can’t remember the last time I got restaurant dessert with a birthday candle. But hey, chocolate cake twice in one day! Hollah. That cake was only 1/4 the size of my cupcake though.
I did some more walking around after dinner but mostly wanted to lounge in my giant bed watching TV. I’m so nerdy, but my favorite thing about staying at “luxury” places (believe me, it’s rare) are the giant bathrooms. So excuse me if half the photos of my birthday stay-cation involve the hotel bathroom. Bathroom was about the size of my bedroom:
I’ve never seen so many toiletries offered. This is what Kate Middleton must feel like.
I bought some stuff at Lush (also in the casino) and took a long, luxurious bath in the whirlpool. Check it out, I could watch TV while sitting in the tub.
It’s always great to take a frivolous bath when you don’t have to clean the tub. I stayed in for as long as possible and then got my wish of staying up late to watch TV in bed. I’m such a bad girl.
The next morning, I was up super early and did 4 easy miles on the treadmill. I had a free spa pass, so after my run I sweated it out in the steam room. I’ve only gotten to do that a couple of times but I think it feels so good and refreshing to do a steam after a workout! I forgot my swimsuit though so I couldn’t enjoy the whirlpool or the swimming pool but I think I got enough soaking from the bathtub already. It wasn’t til I got to the spa that I saw they had an $89 massage special on weekdays if you book in the morning. That’s a killer deal and I was sad I couldn’t take advantage of it.
When I finally got dressed and ready, I had been awake for nearly 4 hours without eating any breakfast so I was starving. Breakfast was at Hash House. I had a goat cheese and sun-dried tomato scramble, with a side of “griddled mashed potatoes”:
Brian had the corned beef hash:
Even though we finished brunch at 11, we were so full that we skipped lunch and I made an antipasto platter for dinner. This is the first time I’ve used this mahogany cheese board.
And now I’m getting ready for tomorrow’s 17 mile run! Gahhh. I filled my water bottles, made breakfast, and got my snacks out. Since I didn’t have to cook dinner, I made a new recipe from the Feed Zone Portables book: cinnamon & sugar bites. I’ll report on that later if I survive the run.
