Should I do a marathon?

I can’t believe I’m saying this, but should I do a marathon?

Registration for the LA Marathon opens next week and it is very accommodating to walkers and slowpokes. My half marathon plan has me going to 17 miles, which puts me in a position to jump into week 17 of Jeff’s marathon plan. This timeline lines up really well with the race date of March 9, 2014. I’m drawn to the LA Marathon because it’s so accommodating to walkers and slowpokes. Look at that, they even have run/walk pace groups (that’s me!) and even walking pace groups. There aren’t many walker-friendly marathons and this one seems to line up with my schedule. I keep feeling like it’s now or never.

One thing holding me back is the idea of 20+ mile training runs in the dead of New England winter. How/where will I run 26 miles in February? The other huge thing that’s holding me back is the fact that I’m so slow. I’m afraid that I’ll sheepishly say “Yeah, I finished a marathon… in 6 hours” and then secretly everyone else will be like “Oh, then you didn’t run a marathon.” I would feel kind of alone during training too for that very same reason. Yep, I just admitted that the biggest reason for doing it is what other people will think.
